What it's for

Umbra is paid, and licensed per machine — nothing in the app renders until an active, device-bound licence is entered. This pane is where you see your plan and seat, activate or move machines, change your key, and read what happens to your Accounts if a payment ever lapses. The short version of that last part: they are never held hostage.

Paste the key from your confirmation email on the activation screen. It binds this machine to the licence — one licence, one device on a solo plan, shown as 1 of 1 seats.

Start a free trial with just an email: one day, no card needed, one trial per computer. A trial is working software, not a warning state, and carries its own countdown.

Work offline between checks

Once activated, Umbra keeps working for 7 days between licence checks, so a flaky connection on drop day is not a lockout.

Active
The licence is working on this machine.
Free trial
A trial, with the days remaining shown beside it.
Payment needs attention
A card was declined once and we are still retrying. Umbra keeps working — a warning, not a lockout.
Offline
We could not reach the licensing service. Your subscription is not the problem, as far as we know.
Not activated on this computer
The key is fine; this machine is not on it — usually a settings folder copied from another computer. Enter the key again to add this machine.
Expired / Cancelled
The subscription has ended. Renew or resubscribe in your dashboard to reactivate this device.

Move a licence to another machine

A solo licence carries one device — the Licence card says so plainly ("One machine at a time") and shows the plan, the masked key, the renewal date and this machine. To move it, press Move to another machine — that deactivates this computer, frees the seat, and returns you to the activation screen, where the same or a new key goes in. Check again re-checks the licence with the server on the spot. Managing billing, plans and the device list all happen on umbrabrowser.com, behind Billing portal.

If a payment lapses, your Accounts stay

This is the promise worth reading before you buy. A lapse, a cancellation, or an unreachable licensing service does not take your Accounts offline.

Still works in limited mode
Open every Account you already have, sign in and check out as normal, export Accounts / cookies / logins, export your purchase ledger, and keep using the connections you set up.
What it stops
Adding a new Account, and importing Accounts from a file or another tool.
